My Lost and Found Life (Audible Audio Edition) Melodie Bowsher Jennifer Betit Yen Audible Studios Books Reviews
It's five days before graduation and Ashley's perfect life is crumbling. Her mother is being accused of embezzling a million dollars, and has disappeared. Ashley can't believe her mother would do something like that, much less disappear and leave her with the fall-out. Although it's starting to look like it all might be true. One by one the things Ashley counted on and took for granted are falling away. There's no way she can afford the senior trip to Hawaii. Her perfect boyfriend won't even acknowledge her. Gone are her plans to go to college in Boston with her best friend. Not to mention the bills, but those can wait for her mom to come back. Except it's getting pretty obvious that she's not coming back.
Suddenly Ashley, who's always just gotten what she asked for, has to fend for herself. It's a hard crash course in reality. There's no way she can afford to keep the house, even after she has a yard sale to sell off its contents. She needs a job, but it's hard to find a job with no work experience. It's impossible to find a place to live without income. The only people who can help are her mother's ex-boyfriend, who doesn't like her, her mother's best friend, who thinks she's a spoiled brat, and the cop who's investigating her mom. Everyone seems to be waiting for her to fail.
Ashley finds herself living in a camper behind a gas station., without heat or running water. She falls into a job at Mad Malcom's, an off-beat coffee shop where the clientele is as nutty as the owner. In her wildest dreams she could never imagine her life getting this off track. The question is, can she pull herself out of where she`s ended up? And, what really happened to her mother?
On the way through she learns a few things about real friends, dangerous people, and personal strength.
MY LOST AND FOUND LIFE is so well-written that Ashley seems like a real person. It's written like an autobiography, and I almost forgot that it wasn't a true story. Especially since it could be--things like this actually happen to people. It is a good reminder that you don't always know what people have been through. As well as a reminder that you might be surprised at what you can do when you run out of options.

My Lost and Found Life is a story about Ashley,Whose mother runs off and is accused of embezzling funds.Ashley has no idea where her mother has gone. She has to grow up fast..but is that possible with how sheltered she is?This story is about Homelessness, abandonment, growing up and proving you can win!
When I first started reading this Im going to be honest Ashley's character was one I could NOT stand. The Entitled, spoiled type.I couldn't connect with her..in fact I got up and walked away from the book for a small bit.BUT then I came back to the story and really delved into it and Ashley finally started growing up and maturing. This isn't a romance story. There is a small bit of romance but it is more of a coming of age/finding yourself story in my opinion.I loved it.I fell in Love with the story as I read it.Ashley was so much stronger then she first thought. If I could have changed anything I would have loved for her to have a bit more romance. This really is a book that once you get into(in my case getting past Ashley's selfishness)You will not want to put down.I highly suggest it.
I found this in the Young Adult section of the library and picked it up for my daughter, but started reading it while waiting to pick her up from school.
First of all, this book content is not for the 'young adult' as targeted by your library the average 15 year old would be bored by job worries, housing problems, etc. to say nothing of unresolved guilt or unrequited love. But the writing style is - breezy, quick to move from incident to next so a short attention span is not taxed, and the explain-everything-not-leaving-too-much-to-think-over. So, maybe for the 18/19 year old, maybe? Even the romance is direct-to-sex, which is surely above the pay grade of middle-schoolers.
Beyond that, Ms. Bowsher does a decent job tracing the path of an entitled brat brought down to earth by reality moving into her life. The idea is great, more so for parents of girls than for the girls themselves, I guess that our 'princessess' are not really ready for the world, and it's all our fault. Entitled or not, any barely-adult would find it difficult to adapt to being forced to get a job, find a home, get new friends, and this book sorta opens our eyes to how under-prepared our kids would be.
But with that premise, it's a bit odd that the author moves the heroine so quickly from 'know nothing' to 'can do'. You get a feeling that any girl who considers Gap clothes passe and only wears 'designer duds' has to travel further to get to self-awareness than any regular middle-class girl, but Ashley Mitchell seems to get from 'my mom is missing' to 'I need to get a job' pretty swiftly. And this is true about most of the book - it's a bit too breezy, too glib, to make a lasting. And what sort of a mom would have friends so superficial or callous that they'd completely drop her daughter from their lives, without making some minimum effort to help her out, when the mom disappears suddenly?
For all that, this book is a cut above the others of its ilk, and worth a read. But for adults (or close to), not so much for the younger demographic.
Well written. Good character development. Plausible story. Moves well; read in one sitting. Would recommend. Possibly more appreciated by women.
fun book....
